Drug treatment

Amicus Counselling & Clinical Psychological Service specialises in providing cocaine addiction treatment & other drug addiction Counselling.  People use drugs for many different reasons. Some individuals use drugs to relax, have fun, to get a “high”, to be part of a group, or out of curiosity, while other individuals use drugs to cope or to escape from physical and/or emotional pain. Drugs have different physical and psychological side-effects depending on the substance.  Drugs may cause short-term enjoyable effects, however in the long-term or using excessively, drugs may cause harmful effects such as the individual becoming physically and/or psychologically dependent. An individual is dependent on drugs when he or she is unable to control the use of a drug despite the negative effects it may have on their life. They may not be aware that they have become dependent on a drug until they try to stop using it. Using drugs may cause personal, financial, occupational, legal, social, physical or mental health  problems.

Do you or have you experienced any of the following as a result of drug use?

  • Anxiety
  • Relationship problems
  • Job loss or poor work performance
  • Injuries related to violence or accidents
  • Drug induced psychosis
  • Engaging in harmful behaviour such as risky sex
  • Drug related legal problems

If you think that taking drugs is affecting your physical or mental health, relationship, work performance or causing other problems, you may want to cut down (harm minimisation) or stop using.

Amicus Counselling specialises in offering drug treatment services to individuals with drug use problems. During your first visit we will assess your drug use pattern (the amount and frequency)and the consequences it may be causing. We will ask you about your treatment goals, what would you like to achieve, and work with you in developing a suitable treatment plan either to cut down your drug consumption (harm minimization) or help you abstain. We are clinical psychologists and we do not prescribe medication. We provide effective evidence based treatment for drug use problems suchas Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Relapse Prevention Strategies and Behavioural Self-Management (for individuals who wish to cut down rather than abstain from drugs). We will help you cope with cravings or with other psychological problems that may be related to your drug use such as depression and anxiety. We will also assist you to achieve other personal goals.
